Grotto Beach
Description
Grotto Beach is one of South Africa’s most popular Blue Flag beaches, set in the coastal town of Hermanus, about an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town in the Western Cape. The beach is the largest in the town and is absolutely breath-taking with rolling waves and a magnificent mountain backdrop. It is perfect for whale watching, sunbathing, beach games, swimming, walks, and a variety of water sports.
Grotto Beach stretches for kilometres and incorporates soft white sands and warm rolling waves. The beach overlooks Walker Bay, a protected whale sanctuary, affirming its status as one of the best land-based whale watching spots in the country. The beach is popular among locals and holidaymakers alike, but it is seldom crowded.
Lifeguards are on duty from December to February and facilities include an interpretive education centre where members of the public can get information on local environmental issues, ablutions, wheelchair facilities, ample parking, braai areas, and a restaurant. A milkwood forest is located just behind the beach and is a protected area offering relief from the sun. The beach is pet friendly.
