Hartbeespoort Dam
Description
Hartbeespoort Dam is an arch type dam built across a gorge cutting through the Magaliesberg mountains in the Bojanala Region of the North West province. Known as one of the top adventure destinations in the country, it offers a great spot for day, weekend or holiday breakaways, especially for residents of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The name of the dam means “pass of the hartebeest†(a type of antelope) in Afrikaans, as it was once a popular spot for hunters who hunted this animal. It was originally only used for irrigation, which remains its primary use, as well as for domestic and industrial use. The Transvaal Yacht Club has been operating here since 1923. NRSI Station 25 is one of only 3 National Sea Rescue Inland stations and provides a water rescue service at the dam.
The dam is perfect for all types of water sports, including parasailing, windsurfing, water skiing, boating, and jetskiing. Adrenaline junkies will enjoy paragliding, hang gliding, and hot air ballooning in the surrounding area. There is also an aquarium, private zoo, elephant sanctuary, cheese farm, cheetah centre, snake park, and cableway. For those who enjoy something a little less strenuous, there are scenic drives, walks, and hikes available.
