Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve
Description
The Matroosberg Private Nature Reserve is situated on the farm Erfdeel, around 35km from Ceres in the Western Cape. The reserve covers more than 1000 hectares of mountain area, and includes the Matroosberg Peak which, at the altitude of 2249m, is the highest peak in the Boland region. Interestingly, the Matroosberg Peak is about 250m higher than Sneeuberg in the Cederberg.
The reserve is known as "the place to be" in winter when snow falls on the tips of the mountains and sometimes even at ground level. Despite being a private reserve, Matroosberg's mission is "conservation through utilization", so they are open to the public to enjoy the beauty of nature. Families pile into their cars and come to Matroosberg to see the snow, whether by hiking the mountain or by making use of the 4x4 trail. Please note that the altitude and mountain climate often cause a sudden drop in temperature, so come prepared with extra warm clothing.
