West Coast Fossil Park

Description

The West Coast Fossil Park asks you to suspend whatever preconceived notions you may have regarding the earth's age, and instead, invites you into a fascinating world to view the remains of species found in the area, with unique animals such as the Agriotherium africanum (aka, the African bear which was once thought to be only a myth), and learn about the short neck, long horned giraffe which once roamed the fertile valley. This is now a National Heritage Site to protect the fossil deposits for posterity.

The first fossils found at Langebaanweg were discovered in 1958, during phosphate mining operations conducted by Chemfos Mine. Since then, the West Coast Fossil Park is considered to be one of the richest and diverse fossil finds ever made, with over 230 species have been identified.

While here, whether you go on the full tour, or only browse the museum, you'll discover fossil carbon dated to 5 millions years ago, and learn why these remains are so beautifully preserved. This is the site of an ongoing palaeontological dig site.

After your tour, visit the Curio gift shop, stop in at the restaurant, or go for a drive and view the wildflower blooming in spring. Bird watching and mountain bike trails are also possible within the park.
