With the wet weather descending all around us, we’re dreaming of summer sunshine and outdoor activities. Despite this, there are some areas in South Africa which have beautiful winter days, and offer couples the chance to get away from the rains, and just enjoy the chilly air. In that vein, we’ve rounded up five of the best romantic getaway accommodations in the Drakensberg.
1. Top House
This gorgeous 4-star graded guest house is situated within Ladybrand and boasts a large, lush garden with some great facilities. It is also one of the oldest houses within the area, and has a rather interesting history, that your host will happily explain should you ask. The house is decked with yester-year inspired furnishings and décor, and this extends to their beautiful rooms which have plush beds, and en-suite bathrooms. Of course modern amenities such as shared DSTV, great smelling toiletries, and Wi-Fi, are provided to guests. From their on-site dining area you will have beautiful views over the lush garden, and can enjoy a tranquil farm-styled breakfast.
2. Mont D’Or Hotel, Spa and Conferencing
Within the picturesque village of Clarens, lies the Mont D’Or Hotel, which has both conferencing facilities, as well as an attached day spa, with some old-world French charm. Inside you will be greeted with plush interiors and comfortable rooms, that have either a fireplace or air-conditioner, and they also offer room service – which certainly means you’ll be quite pampered during your getaway. Enjoy a lavish afternoon tea on-site, or take a drive out into the picturesque country side. You can even enjoy a round of golf at the nearby golf course.
3. Twin Springs
Twin Springs has a warm atmosphere, and gives visitors a chance to get away from technology, and enjoy nature at its best in the Underberg. Here you will have a peaceful stay, with plenty of time for R&R. There are three well-stocked dams that offer fly-fishing, and you can enjoy an afternoon horse-ride into the surrounding mountains. Picnic by the streams that flow through the property, and in the evenings curl up next to your fireplace. There are no televisions, and you will need to bring your own towels. With one of the most enviable views in the country, Pennygum Country Cottages offers three self-catering cottages, and one luxurious self-catering rondavel, each equipped with tasteful decor, a fireplace for winter, and give you an intimate and romantic setting. Menus are available, and food can be ordered provided you give 24-hour prior notice, though all units come standard with a variety of self-catering equipment for those who want to wow their loved one with their cooking skills. The splash pool is much loved in summer, as are the lush lawns for picnicking on, and with a night sky filled with stars, you won’t be disappointed by a visit here.
Champagne Valley is renowned for it’s breathtaking views of the Drakensberg Mountains, as well as the fact the region is in a prime position for visitors to gain access into Giant’s Castle, the Ampitheater, and even to the very peaks of Cathedral Peak! If you choose Acorn Cottages as your accommodation of choice in Champagne Valley, you’ll have access to all of the above, as well as have a beautiful cottage or cosy room to return home to each night. You can unwind on your private patio, enjoy lazing about in the rock pools, have a lavish breakfast spread served below the acacia trees, or a restful braai in the evenings.
