Description

Bellville is a vibrant northern suburb of Cape Town, Western Cape. It is ideally situated close to the Cape Town International Airport, a number of golf courses, wine routes, entertainment venues, and shopping complexes, making it a worthwhile holiday destination in the city. For a stay in Bellville, familiarise yourself with our excellent accommodations.

Bellville was originally founded as a railway station on the line from Cape Town to Stellenbosch and Strand. It was called “12 Mile Post” due to its location of 12 miles (20km) from Cape Town. The historical monument, Twelve-mile Rockstone, lies on the corners of Voortrekker and Durban Roads to mark this distance. The town was renamed Bellville in 1861 after the surveyor general, Charles Bell. Today, Bellville forms part of the greater Cape Town metropolitan area.

Bellville’s close proximity to the N1 highway makes it a convenient destination. Its central location, with breath-taking views over the wine lands and the Stellenbosch Mountains, makes it well worth a visit during any season.

One of Bellville’s prime tourist hotspots is the Tyger Valley shopping centre; a sprawling mall with a variety of shops, boutiques, and restaurants. The adjacent Willowbridge shopping centre is open air, and houses the Barnyard Theatre which hosts a range of exciting shows and the Willowbridge Slow Market every Saturday. Other shopping venues include the High Street shopping complex in Durban Road and the Mayibuye Centre, which houses a range of pieces from South Africa’s anti-Apartheid struggle and is worth a visit as most of the items were originally banned.

Bellville boasts a range of excellent entertainment venues. Spend a big night out in Edward Street, which is filled with popular nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. The most iconic landmark is undeniably the multi-purpose Bellville Velodrome. This venue was originally developed for the South African Olympic Bid and served as Cape Town’s main concert venue until it was overtaken by Grand West’s Grand Arena. Bellville Velodrome has hosted many events such as the World Cycling Federation Championships in 1999 and various artists, including David Gray, Groove Armada, Jimmy Eat World, The Offspring, Pink, 50 Cent, and Kanye West. Other attractions include the Tyger Valley Waterfront, the Reptile Garden at Stodels Nursery, and Cool Runnings Toboggan Track, the first downhill toboggan track in Africa!

Outdoor enthusiasts will be in their element. Bellville is close to a multitude of golfing spots such as the 18-hole Bellville golf course, King David Golf Course, Durbanville Golf Club, Erinvale Gold Club, Paarl Golf Club, and Royal Cape Golf Club. Other activities include the 7.5km hike through Tygerberg Nature Reserve with superb views over the peninsula. The Durbanville Wine Valley, with its endless vineyards, quaint restaurants, and typical South African hospitality should be top of your itinerary when staying in Bellville.
