Description

Bloemfontein, meaning “fountain of flowers” in Dutch, is the commercial capital of the Free State, and one of the three national capitals of South Africa. It is known as “the city of roses” due to the abundance of beautiful flowers, and the annual rose festival held here. The town has an abundance of historical, cultural, and natural attractions that make it the ideal holiday destination. Plan a trip to the city by booking one of our wonderful Bloemfontein accommodations.

Bloemfontein is the sixth largest city in South Africa, and lies on major roads, rails, and air links in every direction. Its central location makes Bloemfontein a convenient spot for visiting, with easy access from anywhere in the country. Bloemfontein is known for its relaxed atmosphere, with very little stress and haste, making it perfect for exploring the town at your leisure.

While you are in Bloemfontein, make the most of the numerous cultural activities on offer. You can do a tour of the Sand du Plessis Theatre which is one of the world’s most modern and technically advanced theatres, or visit Oliewenhuis Art Gallery, a neo-Cape Dutch manor house that has been declared a national museum. Wander through the gardens of the art gallery where state presidents stayed on their visits to the city, and unwind on the rolling lawns, or at the tea garden and restaurant.

Nature lovers will enjoy visiting the beautiful Botanical Gardens, which is the only one of its kind in the Free State, as well as the State President Swart Park and King’s Park and Zoo. A trip to the Naval Hill & Franklin Reserve is a must. The flat-topped hill affords an unrivalled view over Bloemfontein, while the plains boast a variety of giraffe, springbuck, ostrich, and buffalo roaming freely. The White Horse monument makes for great photography, contrasting against the slopes of the hill. It was constructed during the Anglo Boer War as a landmark for horsemen coming in from the plains.

Loch Logan Waterfront forms the entertainment hub of Bloemfontein. It includes rugby, cricket, and athletics stadiums, as well as a number of shops, movie theatres, and restaurants in a tranquil setting. For those seeking a thrill, the Windmill Casino and Entertainment Centre features family activities, gambling areas, a variety of restaurants, and eccentrically themed shows. Fascinating history lessons are afforded to visitors to historical buildings including the City Hall, Appeal Court, Fourth Raadsaal, Supreme Court, Old Presidency, and First Raadsaal. Make sure you don’t miss out on seeing the Bloemfontein National Museum, Queen’s Fort Military Museum, War Museum, and Freshford House Museum which are all steeped in history. The National Women’s Monument, a sandstone shrine to the women and children who perished during the Second War of Independence, offers an emotional experience to all.

With such a diverse array of historic and leisure activities, Bloemfontein is the ideal holiday destination for all ages.
