Description

George is a popular holiday destination situated along the winding coast in the Western Cape. Nestled at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, with an enthralling view over the Indian Ocean, George provides a great base from which to explore the Garden Route and all that it has to offer. Make your trip a reality by browsing the tasteful establishments in George.

George is known as the administrative and commercial hub of the Garden Route, forming the ideal location for conferences and business functions. The town has a well-developed infrastructure with banks, conference facilities, businesses, transport, sporting facilities, and shopping malls like the newly completed Garden Route Shopping Centre, yet George still manages to retain its small town ambience.

George is fondly known as “cold and wet” after their car registration “CAW”, but it is anything but. The moderate climate makes George ideal for outdoor adventure all year round. Activities in George include fishing, hang gliding, diving, water-skiing, hiking, birding, whale watching in season, and horse riding. Other options include canoeing down the Kaaimans River, day trips to the Cango Caves, mountain biking, surf lessons, paragliding, scuba diving, deep sea angling, and quad biking. George is the famous golfing capital of South Africa with numerous world class golf courses. Amongst these are Fancourt Golf Estate, Oubaai and Le Grande George, George Golf Club, Glenwood Short Golf Course, and Kingswood Golf Course.

One should not miss out on a chance to visit the Slave Tree, an ancient English Oak tree in George that has been declared a national monument. It is known as the Slave Tree because of the very large chain and lock embedded in its trunk. The King Edward VII Library Building is an excellent example of Edwardian architecture in George, while the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is South Africa’s last scheduled mixed steam train service, operating on the Outeniqualand Preserved Railway. Its new route operates between George, Hartenbos, and Mossel Bay. The Outeniqua Museum in George houses a large collection of steam locomotives and carriages.

Nature lovers will enjoy Wilderness National Park, Outeniqua Nature Reserve, and the Garden Route Botanical Garden, which boast the largest continuous natural forest area in South Africa, covering about 650km². The whole of the Garden Route is a natural garden that is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the world's smallest but richest plant kingdom with over 8 500 species. At any time of the year, visitors to George are able to enjoy an abundance of ericas, proteas, and restios. George also holds claim to its own rare plant, the George lily, found near water in the deep mountain valleys. The spectacular Wildflower Show held in George in October each year is not to be missed.
