Description

Kokstad, in the KwaZulu Natal province, is named after the Griqua chief Adan Kok III who settled here in 1863. The town is built on the slopes of the Drakensberg, at the base of Mount Surrie (2 224m). Two European Settlers who owned the local trading store, Strachan and Co, introduced South Africa's first indigenous currency - a set of trade tokens which circulated across the entire region, covering an area the size of Ireland.

Today, Kokstad produces fantastic cheese and dairy products.
