McGregor was established in 1861 under its original name, Lady Grey. It was renamed to its current name in 1905 in honour of Reverend Andrew McGregor who had been the minister of the Dutch Reformed Church of the Robertson District for 40 years. The town’s mild climate ensures that McGregor is an enjoyable holiday destination no matter the season. A variety of accommodation, from B&Bs to guest houses, await visitors to McGregor.

The town of McGregor is a popular tourist destination due to its remote location and old world charm, where time seems to stand still. It maintains the quaintness of a 19th century village, characterised by whitewashed cottages featuring lovely gardens with old stone irrigation channels still evident. McGregor is one of the few places in the world that lies directly on ley lines and is considered a sacred site. The devotion to historical building style is evident in McGregor, largely due to an aesthetics committee that has drawn up several guidelines to follow should you consider building in McGregor.

McGregor lies in a valley surrounded by rolling hills riddled with walking and hiking trails waiting to be explored, such as the Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail that meanders between McGregor and Greyton. McGregor’s remoteness ensures a clear night sky where one can enjoy the sparkling stars in their entirety, without the distraction of city lights.

Many locals and tourists come to McGregor for the annual food and wine festival held in August/ September each year, showcasing superior wines from the valley as well as local food specialities. Exploring the Cape Route 62 wine route, the longest of its kind in the world, is a must for all first time visitors to McGregor.

While you’re in McGregor, explore the Breedekloof Wine Route (the youngest wine route in South Africa), visit Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, and the Edna Fourie Gallery. Plan a trip to nearby attractions such as the Marloth Nature Reserve, Riviersonderend Conservation Area, Robertson Golf Course, Robertson Wine Valley, and Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve. Should you seek any extra information, the local official tourism bureau in McGregor offers advice and travel services to visitors free of charge.
