Montagu is known as the “mountain mecca” of the Cape, surrounded by the Langeberg mountain range, and characterised by endless orchards, vineyards, rock formations, and healing hot mineral springs. It boasts a number of preserved Cape Dutch and Georgian National Monuments - with Long Street housing 14 of the town’s 22 national monuments alone. Don’t forget to visit the three historical buildings (Joubert House, Old Mission Church, and the KWV Building Complex) that comprise the Montagu Museum. The museum has been declared a national monument, and boasts a collection of oil paintings and drawings by the famous South African artist Francois Krige, as well as an archive filled with a large collection of documents and photographs, relating to the history of Montagu.

Other activities in Montagu include tractor rides up to the summit of the Langeberg to enjoy traditional South African potjiekos, donkey cart rides, scenic walks, hiking, game viewing, and bird watching. Venture out along the Cape Route 62 and explore over 50 wine cellars, go olive and cheese tasting, or tackle the rock climbing spots in Montagu known to be the best in South Africa.
