Morningside
Description
Morningside is one of Durban’s most popular suburbs, bordered by Berea and the Umgeni River. It enjoys a fantastic location close enough to the city centre, but far enough away to enjoy the benefit of quiet, tree-lined streets away from the crowds. There’s plenty to keep you busy, from a racecourse and 2 stadiums, to beautiful green parks and golden beaches.
Morningside is a beautiful leafy suburb with fantastic spots for leisure and recreation. Mitchell Park is one of the city’s best kept secrets with a walk-through aviary, small zoo, kids’ playground, braai areas, picnic lawns, and a restaurant. The park is home to tortoises, peacocks, cranes, flamingos, ducks, antelope, crocodiles, raccoons, and monkeys. Umgeni River Bird Park, Jameson Park, and Durban Botanic Gardens are also fantastic recreational areas.
The suburb of Morningside has some fine examples of Edwardian and Victorian style homes with tin roofs and wide verandas, such as the State President’s residence. The streets around Florida Road are vibey with a variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and pubs. There is accommodation to suit all needs and budgets, from self-catering to B&Bs.
Head into the city and enjoy a day of shopping at Victoria Street Market or a night out at Kwasuka Theatre and Stable Theatre. Other attractions include Mini Town Durban, the Natal Herbarium, and Riverside Soofie Mosque. Durban has fantastic sports facilities such as Moses Mabhida Stadium and King’s Park Stadium. Moses Mabidha offers more than just watching sport. Enjoy an adventure walk or ride in the Sky Car for a view of the city and coastline or dare to do the Big Rush Big Swing across the stadium.
Thrill seekers will enjoy Suncoast Casino and Greyville Racecourse, especially when it hosts the annual Durban July horse racing event. For those looking for leisure, enjoy a round of golf at Windsor Park Golf Course, Royal Durban Golf Club, and Durban Country Club, or relax on the beaches along Golden Mile.
Morningside offers the best of both worlds with easy access to the city without compromising on affordable accommodation and peace and quiet.
