Description

The little town of Sabie, nestled in the Drakensberg escarpment roughly 5 hours’ drive from Johannesburg, is known for its picturesque beauty. Set on nature’s doorstep in the centre of one of the largest manmade forests in the world, Sabie is located close to the world renowned Kruger National Park and Panorama Route.

Sabie is named after the nearby river where crocodiles and harsh currents are notorious, and originated as a gold rush town. Gold was first discovered by accident during a picnic in 1895 when a bottle shooting game revealed gold specks in the rock where the bullets hit.

The earliest inhabitants of this region were the San people, which is evident from the rock paintings, engravings, and stone tools found here.

The town enjoys a close proximity to the Panorama Route where you can view God’s Window, the Three Rondavels, Blyde River Canyon, and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. The Kruger National Park is just an hour’s drive away where you can spend a day searching for the Big Five and a variety of plains game.

The town has a variety of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, pancake bars, and more. Accommodation is available to suit all needs and budgets.

Sabie is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Leisure activities include fly fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, rock climbing, bird watching, air ballooning, and archery. You can also enjoy adventure sports like helicopter flips, abseiling, and 4x4 trips. River rafting on tubes or kayaks on the Sabie River offers hours of fun for all ages. Enjoy hiking to the waterfalls in the area such as the Bridal Veil Falls, Lone Creek Falls, and Horseshoe Falls which can be reached from the scenic forest track along the south bank of the Sabie River. Don’t forget to visit the Forest Industry Museum, St Peter’s Church, and the Trout and About Trout Farm while you’re here.

Sabie has something for everyone, whether you’re looking for adventure or leisure.
