Salt Rock
Description
Salt Rock is a little coastal town on the Dolphin Coast, just 40 minutes from Durban. With a beautiful beach, fantastic diving opportunities, and small commercial centre, it’s a great destination for those looking for a quiet beach holiday away from the crowds.
Situated just north of Shaka’s Rock and Ballito, Salt Rock is all about sun, sea, and sand. The town got its name during the days of King Shaka, when handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide. Spend your days relaxing on the beach, fishing from the rocks, or snorkelling and diving amongst the offshore reefs surrounded by fascinating marine life. The beach is very safe with a shark net and lifeguards on duty, and a lovely tidal pool for little ones. Keep your eyes peeled for Bottlenose dolphins.
There is a variety of accommodation available in Salt Rock, ranging from self-catering to guest houses for all needs and budgets. While there’s not much in Salt Rock in terms of nightlife, there are a few bars, pubs, and restaurants in town. Salt Rock Country Club is a great base for sport-based activities such as tennis, bowls, or squash. If you’re looking for a day of leisure, spend a few hours exploring Tiffany’s Shopping Mall or browse the Litchi Orchard Market on the second Saturday of the month. There is also a night market held on the last Friday of the month with food, arts and crafts, and live music out in the orchard.
Kids will love Flag Animal Farm with its real farm experience. You can enjoy a tractor ride, feed the chickens, milk a cow, or get a photo of the Welsh ponies, bunnies, pigs, goats, and sheep. There is a tea garden and playground.
Whether you visit for a romantic escape or a family holiday, Salt Rock is a fantastic base for you.
