Underberg
Description
Underberg is a charming little farming town at the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal. The town is a popular stopover for travellers using the Sani Pass to and from Lesotho Lesotho. With its charismatic blend of dusty roads, mountain streams, sandstone mountains, warm pubs, and friendly locals, Underberg promises a holiday to remember.
While Underberg is small, it is by no means quiet. Tourists flock to the area all year round for its glorious natural scenery, particularly in winter when the landscape is covered in glistening white snow.
Underberg, meaning “under the mountain”, has everything you need for your holiday. There is a range of accommodation options to suit all needs and budgets, as well as several grocery stores, two small shopping malls, a hardware shop, butchery, art and craft stores, various restaurants, pubs, and a petrol station.
Underberg is all about being outdoors. Enjoy activities like fly fishing, golfing, birding, mountain biking, river rafting and tubing, and snowball fights in winter. The region is one of South Africa’s premier trout fishing destinations. The Underberg-Himeville Trout Fishing Club holds claim to over 160km of river as well as 60 dams.
The region is also fantastic for hiking. The Sani Saunter stretches from Loteni in the north to Bushman’s Nek in the south and incorporates a variety of hikes and walks through Underberg, Himeville, Giant’s Castle, and Langalibalele Pass. There are three golf courses in and around Underberg, including the Underberg Country Club, Drakensberg Gardens Golf course, and Sani Pass Golf Course.
The Sani Pass is a wonderful attraction not to be missed. Also known as the “Roof of Africa”, the Sani Pass takes travellers along a spectacular 9km mountain road that snakes its way into Lesotho from the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Here you can stop off and enjoy a drink at the highest pub in Africa.
Nearby attractions include Garden Castle Nature Reserve, Highover Wildlife Sanctuary, Himeville Nature Reserve, Impendile Nature Reserve, Mzimkulu Wilderness Area, and Coleford Nature Reserve.
Annual events in Underberg include Splashy Fen, an outdoor music festival held on a farm near Underberg; the Sani2C Mountain Bike Race; and the Drak Challenge, a canoe race held on the Mzimkulu River. Don’t miss a chance to stop at Underberg Pottery Studio and the Funky Cow, a little shop selling traditional Basotho blankets and souvenirs.
Whether you’re looking for an action-packed holiday or a leisurely weekend away, Underberg is a holiday destination that has it all!
