Felt undermined yet I paid the same amount of money paid by others. I was devastated, didn’t know that apartheid still exists. The braai facility that she says is available is for certain guests. The pool is for certain guests. Some guests have to wait for others to swim first, then they can swim. Some guests are not allowed to cook in the self-catering suite; she does not accept the aroma of food cooked by some guests. Some guests were given permission to cook their dishes, but she was shouting at me every time she smells food from my suite. I was not allowed to park my car under cover because the undercover parking is for certain guests. If you arrive early and others are still out, you have to park aside so that others can have space to park. Some guests are not allowed to use the air conditioner, and the TV is not working for some guests.

Wow, I find it hard to reconcile Mrs Stamper's comments with my own experiences. I'm speechless at her claim of 'apartheid still exists,' as all my garden flats were occupied by guests of the same race as her. Over the past 35 years, 90% of my guests have been from the same racial background. I don't understand where this is coming from. I should note that I grew up on a farm, fluently speak Xhosa, and appreciate all races. I personally welcomed both ladies and offered my assistance as they were keen to attend a meeting and were running late. My helper, Cynthia, helped them carry some of their luggage to their garden flat. Having full occupancy, I asked Mrs Stamper to park inside my yard behind my own car, to utilise the limited parking, ensuring there are no cars left outside on the street. I don't want any of my guests to feel there is no parking available if two cars are already parked. She parked at her convenience with no issues. All my outdoor facilities are for shared use, including the pool and the portable braai. Mrs Stamper's friend enquired about using the swimming pool which is adjacent to my another garden flat, and I only requested that they give the guests in that flat their space, as their seating area is outside the flat. Every garden flat has its own private seating area. There has never been an issue with cooking facilities in my garden flats. I'm astounded at how my words have been misconstrued to imply that I discourage cooking. It's far from true; I have numerous long-term guests, often workers from companies, who cook regularly in my flats with no issues at all. The air conditioner was not functional, but a fan was available as in other flats, and there haven't been any complaints about this arrangement. The TV was functioning! My garden flats are separate from each other, so I am unsure how Mrs Stamper knows that some TVs weren't working.

Short stay in Grahamstown. Room and bathroom was beautiful and clean and the beds were very comfortable but this was probably the most mismatched/inconvenient accommodation I've had since I started travelling and definitely not value for money. The room was barely big enough for 2 people. I informed the owner that I also have a dog with me. Two beds pushed up against each other with almost no room to move around it. There was a single dining chair and suitcases had to be opened on the floor. With luggage and my dog on the floor, it was almost impossible to make coffee. Cheap coffee supplied. Kitchenette is a microwave and kettle. No basin to wash dishes. Crockery in poor shape. WiFi did not work. Aircon did not work. Steep stairs up to the room was very inconvenient. Only windows are next to head of bed. It had to be closed by 1 am because it was so cold, leaving the tiny room with 3 occupants panting for air. We were met by a domestic worker who was only interested in leaving for home. Laundry service only available in the week it seems.

Definitely a place to recommend for an overnight stay in Grahamstown. We found Eagle's Nest a warm, cozy and comfortable place to stay. We would definitely book there again - we felt right at home immediately.
