Fantastic stay, would definitely recommend this to anyone! We had a wonderful two-day break. The staff were very helpful and assisted us in finding a parking spot. It was very busy. The location was great, just a 5-minute stroll to Kalk Bay shops and restaurants.

Good service and staff. Thank you Juan for your excellent service and friendliness. Even though we didn't get a room with a bath that we booked, it was very pleasant. Parking is limited, but worth it. We will come again anytime.

Not recommended at all. Today I had the first time to sit down to write a review about my stay in Sonnekus Kalkbay. Have I had time to write this review on Monday it would’ve been scathing and disastrous for the guesthouse. When I made the booking through the website, I selected an available as per the website. This room was called Murex and was situated on the first floor. After making the booking and receiving the confirmation, I called to make sure that the room I selected and paid for, was the room that we were going to stay in. I selected this room as friends have stayed there before and highly recommended the room, first floor and breezy. Upon arrival, I was taken to the back of the building on the ground floor past two kitchens to a room apparently called room number 10, which they call the garden view room. It was quite obvious that this room was the standby room. This was not the room we booked. The gentleman at reception, who is called Blessed, was amazing and very accommodating with the limited powers that he had. We tried to contact the owner but only reached a gentleman, lots of attitude and ended up making the problem mine. I was told that the room that I selected had a leak from the room above and wasn’t suited for accommodating guests. When I asked to see the room to decide myself whether this room was suitable for accommodating guests, I was told that the key for the room was missing. This already raised the first doubt as I knew I was lied to. The room was rented to somebody else. It was as clear as daylight. I am fully aware that I made a last-minute booking, and also that I double-checked that the room which I selected and paid for was in fact the room confirmed. I was told by the guest house that they only found out at 12 o’clock in the afternoon that the room was not suitable for occupation. I enquired as to why they did not inform the website about the situation, however, they didn’t have any comment on this. We ended up in the back room, which was situated next to a noisy kitchen (the following morning) and the bathroom window opened up into a service lounge which was clearly used for management or staff to stay in. Also, the cupboard doors on the sides were locked which gave us the impression that this room was used for staff or management. Coffee and sugar was provided in the room, there was no milk nor any kettle in sight. How does this work? Clearly, another sign that this is a standby room for stuff ups and disasters. We returned at 12:15 am from dinner and could not get into the guest house as the keys on our room key did not work on the front door. The next morning I went to reception to tell them about the incident and handed the staff the keys to try and open the front door. To everybody's surprise, the keys did not work on the front door. We have photos of this useless exercise. This again was proof that the room in the back was not used for guest purposes. None of the keys worked and we were forced to find an open window and climb through the window at 1 am to have access to our hotel. I hope the hotel has cameras in place to prove footage that we had to climb through the window. Quite embarrassing and unprofessional for a business that would like to be portrayed as a professional guest house service. This was shocking, disgusting, unprofessional and proof that we were getting ripped off. It is not about the money, it’s about the fact that this establishment is trying to accommodate clients, lying to them, ripping them off whether it’s one Rand or R2000 and trying to cover it up with lies. I am most atrociously disgusted by the way they handled the situation and have the deepest heartfelt sympathy for the gentleman named Blessed who tried to rectify the situation. He did try to offer us breakfast and free drinks, however, we didn’t want to accept as not even a King’s buffet would make up for the nonsense that we had to endure. I’ve never had a bad experience with the website and I almost want to say that the website is not at fault as the Hotel should have informed them about the room problem if all this was true. We got the impression that Sonnekus rented out our room to other guests as we were a last-minute booking and couldn’t bother about their reputation or the way they treat guests. Thank heavens I am local and not an international tourist because this is an embarrassment for South African tourism and international tourists. The location of Sonnekus is amazing, the house is characterful, and it is evident that they trying to create an ambience with the furniture and decor. The lack of interest of the owner to make sure that this is a quality establishment with outstanding service is quite evident Along with the attitude of the gentleman on the phone.

Pity about the smell in the bathroom. Our stay was lovely, except for the bathroom that smelled like cat wee. We told the manager about this but were informed that they were fully booked and could not move us to another room. What was disappointing is that they did not offer to do anything about the smell in the bathroom. We went out and bought incense to burn to get rid of the smell.

Just don't sleep well. Cockroach infestation, reported but no action or feedback received. Marks on towels, pillowcases and holes in sheets. Fan noisy.

Net nie lekke slaap nie. Kokkerotplaag, het aangemeld, maar geen aksie of terugvoer ontvang. Merke op handdoeke, kussingslope en gate in lakens. Waaier raas.
