Vanderbijlpark
Description
Vanderbijlpark is an industrial city on the Vaal River in the south of the Gauteng province. It is home to the Emerald Casino Resort, Emfuleni Golf Course, the Vaal Mall and a population of over 220,000 people.
The town was founded after a young American scientist, by the name of Dr HJ van der Bijl, was requested by the then Prime Minister Jan Smuts to advise on South Africa's industrial development. The steelworks began operating in 1947 and the town was proclaimed in 1949. Today, Vanderbijlpark and the neighbouring towns Vereeniging and Sasolburg form what is known as the “Vaal Triangleâ€, a major industrial region of South Africa.
