Umdoni Bird Sanctuary
Description
Umdoni Bird Sanctuary, also known as Amanzimtoti Bird Park, is a wonderful family attraction situated just 20km from the Durban city centre, in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal. The sprawling 4.5 hectares of landscaped lawns and gardens boast over 150 different species of birds to be spotted and enjoyed by both avid and amateur birders.
Umdoni Bird Sanctuary features numerous attractions that make it well worth a visit. Visitors can enjoy relaxing on the lush green lawns, listening to the call of the birds, or enjoying a cup of tea at the tea garden overlooking the pond teeming with water birds. The more adventurous can head off on a self-guided trail leading through the indigenous riverine forest to spot more than 150 species of birds. The park also features picnic areas and a number of bird hides.
Birds you can expect to see at the park include spurwing geese, giant kingfisher, hamerkop, white-faced duck, greenback heron, narina trogons, and the endangered spotted ground thrush. Rare blue duiker and Cape clawless otter also frequent the bird park.
