Barberspan Bird Sanctuary
Description
The Barberspan Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest waterfowl sanctuaries in Southern Africa, located between Delareyville and Sannieshof on the N14 highway, just 3 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. This bird sanctuary is the largest of a series of pans in the fossil bed of Harts River, home to over 12,000 birds in over 365 different species.
Barberspan is one of the few permanent bodies of water in the western Highveld, measuring 2,000 hectares. The sanctuary is home to birds such as flamingos, pelicans, grebes, terns and some of South-African duck species. There are several camping spots and hiking trails to be found along the angling shore line. Bird Life South Africa has declared it an important national birding site.
