Epworth School
Description
Epworth School in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg, consists of a co-ed prep school from Grade RRR to Grade 7, and a private girls-only high school from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The 16 hectare campus offers boarding for high school girls and a fantastic range of sport and academic facilities. Epworth School currently has 415 students in the prep school and 368 students in the high school.
HERITAGE
Epworth School was founded in 1898 by Miss Emily Lowe and Miss Emma Mason and named after the birthplace of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. The school opened its doors on 3 August 1898 with an initial enrolment of 45 children (19 juniors and 26 seniors) of the early Natal settlers.
The school motto is Fida Humana Fortis which means “Faith, compassion, courage.”
ACADEMICS
The 2014 matriculates achieved a 100% pass rate in IEB National Senior Certificate.
SPORTS & CULTURE
Epworth is the top school in South Africa for squash and canoeing, and offers a variety of other sports. It is well known for its adventure programme which involves cycling, running, hiking, and kayaking.
