Fairview Racecourse
Description
Fairview Racecourse is the only horse racing track in Port Elizabeth, situated in the suburb of Greenbushes, in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Fairview is managed and maintained by Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited. Fairview offers horseracing on a weekly basis, either on the Turf or the Poly Track.
The PolyTrack has an all-weather surface which allows racing to take place in most weather situations.
Horse racing is a hugely popular sport in South Africa, with regular racing taking place around the country. The sport in South Africa enjoys a long and rich history that can be traced back to 1797, with the first recorded race club meeting taking place in 1802.
The tracks:
Turf - 2,700 m near oval - Races up to 1,200 m straight course - Beyond 1 200 m clockwise round turn with 800 m run-in - High-number draws best in races down the straight (mostly downhill) - low numbers favoured over 1,400 m and 1,600 m
Poly Track - Wax-coated mixture of silica sand and recycled synthetic fibers and rubber/pvc - 1 800 m near oval on inside of existing turf track - 400 m run-in - All races run clockwise round turn
