Howick Falls
Description
Howick Falls, situated in Howick outside of Pietermaritzburg, are well worth a visit when you're travelling along the Midlands Meander. At 95m, they're the same height as Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and date back to when Kwazulu Natal was first inhabited by man. In fact, this region is reputed to have been much the same for the last 30,000 years.
While Howick Falls on the Umgeni River may not rank amongst the tallest waterfalls in the world, they are amongst the most notorious! The first death was recorded here in 1851 and there have been a further 40 deaths recorded here since then. Most of them were considered to be suicides, but Howick Falls has also seen its share of accidents and even historic murders.
Scandal aside, Howick Falls are simply breathtaking, and the deafening rush of water from the viewing deck is incredibly relaxing and mystifying at the same time. Several arts and crafts stalls can be ound on the viewing platform and along Morling Road which leads down to the falls. There are also public toilet facilities, curio shops, and a small coffee shop available.
