John Rupert Theatre
Description
The John Rupert Theatre is the only theatre in the Camdeboo region of the Eastern Cape. The theatre was founded when Dr Anton Rupert purchased and restored the old Coloured Missions Church (referred to as the “Groot Londonâ€) and donated it to Graaff-Reinet for the benefit of the community. After serving the town as an art gallery, the building was turned into a little theatre in 1980 by the Graaff-Reinet round table.
The theatre is the core of Graaff-Reinet’s culture. Run by a committee of volunteers, two films are screened a month, with an evening show on the first Wednesday and a matinee on the third Sunday of every month. In addition, it also hosts a number of plays, musicals, comedy, and dance.
