Kogelberg Nature Reserve
Description
The Kogelberg Nature Reserve is one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots, located in Kleinmond, just an hour outside of Cape Town in the Western Cape. This 100,000 hectare unesco registered reserve is home to 1880 different plant species, 77 of which you won’t find anywhere else on earth.
The reserve boasts captivating landscapes that range from white sandy beaches and rocky shores, to rugged mountains, vineyards, and coastal plains. There are plenty of hiking trails meandering between Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond where numerous fynbos species can be seen. Hikers should note that the weather conditions are variable and unpredictable.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the enchanting plant and bird life. Wildlife includes a few leopards, the Cape clawless otter, baboons, dassies, hares, wild horses, and smaller antelope like klipspringer and grysbok. Whale watching is enjoyed in the winter months.
