Maropeng Visitor Centre
Description
Maropeng is the official visitors’ centre for the Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site in the Magaliesberg region of Gauteng (about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria). Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin" in Setswana, the main indigenous language in this area of South Africa, and is believed to be the birthplace of humankind.
A visit to Maropeng is the perfect way to round off a tour of the nearby Sterkfontein Caves. Tours begin at the Tumulus, an ancient burial mound where one can view ancient tools at the excavation site. Visitors are then transported billions of years back in time via an underground boat ride that leads through the four elements of fire, earth, air, and water - past volcanoes, icebergs, waterfalls, wind tunnels, and lightening displays. Exhibitions include authentic fossils displays and interactive displays with intriguing facts about humankind.
