Mayibuye Centre

Description

The Mayibuye Centre in Cape Town is home to a vast collection of historical documents and photographs that tell the story of the struggle for freedom that was fought by the oppressed peoples of South Africa. Situated at the University of the Western Cape, The Mayibuye Centre offers visitors will a chance to be enthralled by the history of South Africa's struggle against Apartheid that has remained untold until recent years.

Features

• Historical papers section There are more than 300 collections of personal and organisational documents detailing the struggle for liberation in South Africa, many of which were banned. Important papers include over 10,000 personal papers of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, over 8,000 pages of personal correspondence from Ahmed Kathrada, and the documents of the General Recreation Committee.

• Photographic archive The photographic archive consists of around 30,000 negatives, 80,000 prints, and 4,000 transparencies documenting South African life under Apartheid. Important collections include collections by Eli Weinberg and Leon Levson, as well as around 2,000 prints which chronicle the history of the African National Congress and the broad liberation movement from the 1920s to present.

• Audio visual srchives Stories of bravery and human suffering are told in hundreds of recordings, speeches, interviews from former political prisoners.

• Art Art works, artefacts, posters, and banners.
