Mokala National Park

Description

Mokala National Park, situated approximately 70km from Kimberley in the Northern Cape, is the newest addition to the South African National Parks (SANParks). The isolated dolerite hills create a sense of serenity and seclusion, and when you pass through the koppies, you will be met with unexpected sandy plains that skirt the horizon. Tributaries run from the hills to the Riet River, etching their trail in the vast landscape.

“Mokala” is the Setswana name for the camel thorn trees that populate this arid, semi-desert region of the Northern Cape. The camel thorn is an incredible resource to the wildlife and people who have to survive the often harsh climate. Traditionally, the gum and bark have been used by local tribes to treat coughs, colds, and nosebleeds. Some even use the roasted seeds as a coffee substitute. This important species varies from a small, spiny shrub barely 2m high, to a tree up to 16m tall with a wide, spreading crown.

• Bush braais and breakfasts under a 400 year old camel thorn tree (minimum 5 guests with bookings made 2 weeks in advance).
