Museum Barberton
Description
The Barberton Museum was founded in the late 1800s during the time that the town's gold prospectors began to move onto greener pastures. The museum was started from the donations of just a few people, such as Mr. Otto Elka, who gave numerous fascinating specimens of minerals and rocks.
Today, the museum includes many object of historical significance – and now encompasses the nearby Block House building, as well as the Belhaven House Museum, Stopforth House Museum, and Fernlea Museum. If you visit, you'll discover the displays showcasing the general Barberton history; sections for just the mining and geology of the area, and also an in depth overview of the history of the Swazi’s.
The museum is famous for its historic displays of black and white photography. Some of the photographs here with take the viewer back to the days around Berberton's heyday, but many images also illustrate the lonelier and poorer years suffered thereafter.
