Pafuri Gate
Description
Pafuri Gate is located 600km from Johannesburg and provides access to the northernmost section of the Kruger National Park. It is situated in mopane woodland, between Limpopo and Luvuvhua Rivers near Mabyeni Koppie.
Vegetation in this area of the park is much more arid than in the southern areas, and many of the rivers have run dry. However, this dry land of mopane trees offers its own charms. The game is sparse here but because this section of the park is more remote, it offers a much more private experience (comparable to that of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park).
Wildlife to be spotted here includes large herds of buffalo, elephant, baboon, bushpig, and various antelope. Leopards can be spotted near the Luvuvhua River bridge which in turn offers engaging views over the river and surrounding forest. This region is also one of the best spots for bird watching with rare species like Pel’s fishing owl, Bohm’s spinetail, the African finfoot, and the white-crowned lapwing.
Pafuri picnic site
There is just one lookout point in the whole of the northern section of Pafuri. This picnic site should be your first stop. There are braai facilities here, as well as ablutions surrounded by Anna trees and thick bushes.
