Phalaborwa Gate
Description
The Phalaborwa Gate is located 490km from Johannesburg in the northern Kruger National Park, and provides easy access to the central region park. The open grasslands in this region of the Kruger support huge herds of antelope, which in turn, support many predators. Lion sightings are common in this central stretch, as half of the Kruger National Parks lions live here.
Northern Kruger is very different to southern Kruger. The northern region has a dry climate and Mopane vegetation which means there are less animals in this part of the park. However, this region still offers very rewarding experiences, with more than half of the elephant population residing in this area.
The best game viewing opportunities can be found in the drainage lines and the contours around dry steam beds as more lush grass can be found in the lower lying areas. You can get out of your car within 10km from entering the Phalaborwa Gate to view the Sabie waterhole or the Masorini Cultural Village at the foot of the Vudogwa Mountain. Look out for wild dogs and Sabie antelope.
