Port Of Mossel Bay

Description

The Port of Mossel Bay, also known as Mossel Bay Harbour, is situated in the Western Cape, halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. While it is certainly the smallest commercial harbour along the South African coast, it plays an active role in both the oil and fishing industries.

The port was previously used by sailors as a base for sending letters back home to family and friends. The Post Office Tree was used as a make-shift post box and today it is a landmark with a special stamp used on outgoing letters.

As the port deals mostly with fishing and service craft, it doesn’t have very much in the line of infrastructure. There are some great facilities for processing catches and the maintenance of fishing vessels. The harbour has two mooring bays located offshore inside the port limits.
