Description

Post Retief Barracks was built 1836 and named in honour of legendary voortrekker leader, Piet Retief. Designed by Charles Selwyn of Royal Engineers, it is located in Post Retief, Eastern Cape, and is finest example of frontier War Fortifications still standing. The stone walls and various buildings, including the officers quarters and stables, bear testimony to this small outpost which played a vital role during the 8th Frontier war 1850. War graves can be found a short distance from the fort. Remains of Piet Retief's house also a national monument
