SAB World of Beer
Description
SAB World of Beer offers exciting brewery tours in Joburg’s Newtown Precinct, Gauteng. As the country’s biggest brewer, South African Breweries (SAB) has poured a lot of heart into creating the World of Beer, which was officially opened by President Nelson Mandela in 1995 in celebration of SAB’s centenary year. This remarkable attraction has helped to rejuvenate tourism in the city centre.
The guided tour is 90 minutes of informative fun as you explore the history and heritage of brewing beer in South Africa. The tour takes you from the tombs of Egypt, where brewing methods were first pioneered, to a recreated township shebeen, and nostalgic mining town tavern. Venture through a greenhouse showcasing raw ingredients, discover how the ancient Mesopotamians brewed their thick, sweet beer, and learn how different recipes spread across Europe. The Brew House and Malting facilities are impressive and the multimedia displays create an enjoyable interactive experience. The tour ends at the On Tap Pub and Restaurant where you can enjoy two free beers and a complimentary World of Beer glass. If that’s not enough to commemorate the occasion, visit the Tangards and Toggs shop and take home a selection of clothing, caps, glasses, and accessories in your favourite brand of South African beer.
