Description

Shelter Cave, also known as the Game Pass Shelter, situated in Kamberg within the world heritage site of Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park houses some of the best preserved San rock paintings in South Africa. Visitors can enjoy a guided walk to the cave which takes up to 4 hours in each direction, to see as many as 500 San Bushman paintings located in the reserve, some of which date back over 800 years. The recently-opened Kamberg Rock Art Centre is an extraordinary visit for those interested in bushman rock art.

The rock art at Shelter Cave were the first South African rock art paintings to be seen by the rest of the world, featuring in the Scientific American as far back as 1915. The rock art paintings are national monuments protected by law.

The Kamberg San Rock Art Centre offers audio-visual material on the San, and you can visit the cave with a guide. Daily morning and afternoon tours are led by community guides. Nearby, you will find Waterfall Shelter where paintings are said to impart magical powers to the water.
