Silverstroom Beach
Description
Silwerstroomstrand is a wonderful Blue Flag beach, situated approximately 13km north of Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape. Within this bay, a smaller rocky point called Wintersteen provides added protection from the swell for safe swimming in the sea, and there is also a tidal pool for those wanting a warmer and calmer dip.
Named after the ‘silver stream’ to the north, the 3km Silwerstroomstrand is ideal for long beach walks. The northern side is backed by a sand dune field, made up of migrating sand and strandveld vegetation, which is beautiful when it flowers during the spring season. Due to its conservation value, this is the southern limit of a potential core area identified for the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve. The habitat supports a variety of birds.
The beach is well-established, with picnic facilities, a large parking lot, several ablution blocks, paved walkways, and children’s entertainment areas. Shore angling is popular, particularly for hottentot fish during January and February. Dogs are allowed, provided they are kept on leashes.
