FNB Stadium (Soccer City)
Description
FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City, is located in Nasrec, in the Soweto region of Johannesburg, South Africa. Designed as the main association football stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the FNB Stadium is the largest stadium in Africa with a capacity of 94,736. The stadium has 195 suites and a seating capacity of 88,530. The stadium is also known by its nickname "The Calabash" due to its resemblance to the African pot or gourd.
Originally known as National Stadium SA, it has over two decades of history and heritage associated with its name. Built in 1987, the stadium has been the venue of both jubilation and sorrow, hosting several landmark events in the history of South Africa. It was the site of Nelson Mandela's first speech in Johannesburg after his release from prison and the site of Chris Hani's funeral. It was also the venue for the 1996 CAF Africa Cup of Nations finals, where South Africa came out triumphant.
The stadium is home to the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club and is the national stadium for Bafana Bafana. Several rugby matches have also been hosted at the stadium. The multi-purpose FNB Stadium also offers a variety of venue options for corporate and private events, as well as open-air music concerts. A host of international artists have performed and are scheduled to appear at the stadium, including U2, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
