Statue of Paul Kruger
Description
A statue of Paul Kruger is located in Church Square in front of the City Hall in Pretoria, Gauteng. Paul Kruger, lovingly known as Uncle Paul (Oom Paul), was the State President of the South African republic (Transvaal). The statue is found in the centre and can be seen from anywhere in the square.
The statue was cast bronze in Rome, completed in 1899 and arrived at Lorenco Marques just as the Anglo Boer War started. The pedestal already waiting on Church Square stood vacant for many years. It was finally unveiled in the spot in Church Square by D.F Malan on 10 October 1954. The Kruger National Park is also named after him as well as the Krugerrand coin, which has the face of Paul Kruger on it.
