The Steve Biko Statue stands prominently in front of the East London city hall in East London, Eastern Cape. Steve Biko was one of South Africa’s most influential leaders in the struggle against apartheid. In his effort to grow Black Consciousness he was taken into police custody where suspicious circumstances led to his tragic death in 1977.
