Sunland Big Baobab
Description
The Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ in Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo, is famous for being the widest of its species in the world, and for housing a bar and wine cellar in its hollowed out trunk.
Discover a coveted drinking haven within a Baobab tree that likely pre-dates the pyramids of Giza! Baobabs are one of the largest tree species around and the one on Sunlands Farm has the distinction of being the oldest of its kind in Africa - dated to just over 6000 years old. When baobab trees reach the age of 1000 years, their insides begin to hollow out, while the tree continues to grow. The restaurant within the one on Sunlands Farm has utilized the hollow space by putting in a bar and a wine cellar, and up to sixty people have been accommodated here at one time.
