The Big Tree
Description
The Big Tree is a popular tourist attraction situated in a reserve close to the quaint Storms River Village in the Eastern Cape. This magnificent 1000-year old Outeniqua Yellowwood tree is well worth a visit, towering at an impressive height of 36.6m. The trunk has a circumference of nearly 9m and the canopy boasts a spread of 33m.
The tree is reached via an easy walk through the forest. As the tree is surrounded by a wooden walkway, you're able to view it from all angles. Nearby you will also find the Fallen Tree, another centuries-old behemoth that crashed to the ground in 1994.
The reserve has well-marked hiking trails, ranging from 2km to 12km. Maps are available from the kiosk inside the reserve or at the Storms River tourism office.
