The Labia Theatre

The Labia Theatre is charmingly old school cinema located on Orange Street in the Cape Town city centre, Western Cape. Renowned as the oldest independent art-repertory cinema in the country, The Labia shows independent movies, foreign films, historical cinema, and other alternative and art circuit films.

Originally an Italian Embassy ballroom, the theatre was opened by Princess Labia in May 1949 as a theatre for the staging of live performances. It has been operating as a cinema for many years, drawing visitors who are attracted by the quality of the movies, old world ambience, the reasonable admission prices, and the opportunity to enjoy a beer, glass of wine, or slushy puppy cocktail in the movie theatre.

The theatre boasts 4 characteristic screens, a licensed bar, cosy coffee bar with homemade delicacies, and a chocolate bar with all sorts of treats. Be warned that the theatre can get very full on weekend evenings so be sure to arrive early as there is no delegated seating.
