University Of The Free State
Description
The University of the Free State is a multi-campus public university in Bloemfontein. It began in 1904 as Grey University College with only 6 students and today has over 33,000 students. Previously an all-white university, it admitted its first black students in the early 1900s at the end of apartheid. Today all lectures are offered in English and Afrikaans.
The main campus is situated near the centre of Bloemfontein. There are also satellite campuses, namely South Campus in Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa Campus in the eastern Free State. It also includes a Business School.
The university facilities include sport and medical amenities, a student centre, student newspaper, campus radio station, library, career and guidance centre, student theatre, and a computer centre.
Oprah Winfrey received an honorary doctorate in education from the university in June 2011.
