Nelspruit Nature Reserve
Description
The Nelspruit Nature Reserve is well known as a local birding hotspot in Sonpark, close to Nelspruit Primary School and next to the Trim Park in Nelspruit, the capital city of Mpumalanga. The reserve offers 3 popular walks through the riverine bush, woodland, and vlei areas of the reserve, and provides spectacular birding opportunities.
Birds you can see include Gorgeous bush shrike, Southern boubou, Purple-crested turaco, Thick-billed weaver, Golden weaver, Olive bush shrike, Green twinspot, and Red-backed Mannikin. Other sights include the African goswhak which circles overhead in the early mornings, and the African wood owl and Freckled nightjar who swoop around after dark.
