Fans of lush forests, leisurely afternoons, and carefree cruises already know that Knysna is one of the top destinations in South Africa, as it caters for all traveller types – from families and couples in love, to small or large groups of friends. We’ve recently started asking accommodation owners to give us their frank opinion of their area; such as what visitors can do according to the weather, and what child-friendly activities are available, along with a few other insightful recommendations. Esther, the owner of Oyster Creek Lodge opened up about what fun activities are available in Knysna, and where the locals choose to hang out.

  1. What is your Favourite thing about your area:

That’s a tough question to give just one answer to. There are so many great activities available, from going on a leisurely cruise around the lagoon, to visiting Featherbed Nature Reserve. There are great forest hikes all around, Tsitsikamma is a great day-trip to do for canopy tours, and the Stormsriver Adventures offers bungee jumping not too far off from us.

  1. When the weather is good, I recommend:

Hmm, well as mentioned above, a cruise around the lagoon is fantastic to experience and a trip to the Knysna Elephant Park is both awe-inspiring and fun. Those who don’t mind taking a bit of a drive can experience Birds of Eden and Monkeyland which are adjacent to each other, and are situated in Plettenberg Bay. Monkeyland is the world’s first free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary, while Birds of Eden is the largest free-flight bird sanctuary, and both are beautiful and educational.

  1. When the weather is bad, I recommend:

Knysna has a few indoor attractions, such as local museums and art galleries. For those who tire of the bad weather, a drive to Oudtshoorn should be pleasant, and there you can explore the famed Cango Caves, visit the ostrich farmers, and drive to view the Rust en Vrede waterfall.

  1. Some great places to eat:

There are numerous eateries in Knysna, but some of my favorites are:

  • Classico, situated in the Knysna Waterfront, is open for lunch and dinner with a variety of meal options that range from vegetarian dishes to seafood spreads.
  • 34 Degrees South can be found along the main road, and this eatery is a one-stop shop that has a deli, sushi bar, wine shop, clothing emporium, fish monger, and more!
  • Sorocco is set on the water’s edge within the Thesen Harbour, and they offer plenty of great natural views, as well as a varied menu, chic décor, and friendly service.
  • Dry Dock is a fine-dining restaurant that has a prime spot within the waterfront. Enjoy the fresh air by dining on the outdoor terrace, while watching the yachts dart about the bay. There are another two restaurant levels, and a wide selection of cuisine is served, along with outstanding cocktails.
  • Wu’s Chinese Restaurant and Sushi Bar within the Waterfront is fantastic, because they give generous portions at a competitive price, and have beautiful oriental décor in place.

  1. Where to take the kids:

There are numerous nearby beaches where families can enjoy a day in the sun, building sandcastles, playing beach cricket, or collecting shells. There’s also the nearby Puzzle Park, situated in Plettenberg Bay, which will lead to hours of entertainment – with a giant 3D maze on-site, a rope puzzle maze, and even a forest walk puzzle. Another great family day trip is to Waterworld, also situated in Plettenberg Bay.

  1. Where the locals hang out:

Most of the locals usually converge at the Friday Market, found along Welbedacht Lane, and held in the evenings from 16:00pm – 20:00pm. Here, you can buy little arts and crafts, enjoy a hearty late lunch or delicious early dinner from one of the local chefs. There is entertainment for children as well, with a jumping castle and face-painting usually offered. There’s often live entertainment, to get everyone in the weekend spirit, and the occasional bonfire.

  1. The best kept secret:

There are too many to count! We’ve got beautiful forest gems dispersed along the hiking trails; free-flowing ice-cold rivers you can swim in, numerous adventure activities; and more. Though the friendly locals, and specialised boutique shops definitely make visiting Knysna a special experience.
