Description

Elands Bay is a small seaside town on the West Coast of South Africa. It is a major surfing destination and is noted for its caves that are home to thousand year old Bushmen paintings. It is the perfect place to unwind in tranquil surroundings and indulge in activities such as rowing, sailing, rock climbing, and whale watching. Experience Elands Bay for yourself with our fantastic accommodations.

Elands Bay’s magic lies in its riveting valleys of indigenous fynbos, rugged hills offering great rock climbing opportunities, wetlands rich in birdlife, stretching golden beaches, and its large seal colony where hundreds of seals can be viewed. Southern Right Whales and Haviside’s dolphins are often spotted along the Elands Bay coastline, particularly between June and November. While in Elands Bay, be sure to explore the local wetland, Verloerenvlei, one of the largest estuaries on the west coast, which has a wonderful array of water birds.

The town of Elands Bay features a range of excellent accommodation waiting to be experienced. While here, one can partake in numerous nature activities such as exploring the caves above Elands Bay, where numerous cave paintings done by the Bushmen can be seen. The Elands Bay Cave, along with most of Baboon Point on which it is situated, has been declared a provincial heritage site since 2009.

Other activities to be enjoyed in Elands Bay include dining at the Tin Kitchen country restaurant, which serves local organic meat and fish dishes, as well as crayfish and calamari, in and around a 300 year old barn. It offers shaded seating areas and beautifully manicured lawns to add to the laidback environment. All of the vegetables and salad ingredients are home grown. Alternatively, head to Vensterklip Farm Pub (meaning “stone window”) for a more laid-back experience, which is great for casual drinks and watching sporting events. If you’re in Elands Bay at the right time, be sure to visit the farmers market held on the first Saturday of every month.

The town of Elands Bay and the neighbouring villages of Redelinghuys, Velddrif, and Aurora are magical destinations during the spring wildflower season. Discover the quiet country back roads where you are promised a captivating display of wild flowers. Elands Bay is mainly undeveloped, allowing a sense of closeness with nature, great for escaping the skyscrapers and stresses of urban life.

Explore the dirt roads around Elands Bay by foot, car, or bike, which lead past Bobbejaanberg where the waves crash along the rocks and walls of the lobster-processing plant. Occasionally rock lobsters stroll out of the sea to get oxygen, while thousands die on the beach caused by a phenomenon known as “red tide”. Fresh-water and salt-water fishing, as well as seasonal licensed crayfish-diving are popular activities in Elands Bay. A limited bag of crayfish can be caught in season, but please note that a permit is required.
