Jeffreys Bay
Description
Jeffreys Bay, known as J-Bay, is a beautiful coastal town in the Eastern Cape, about an hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth. This famous surfing destination is characterised by small town attractions, pristine shell-lined beaches, and the best surfing waves in South Africa! Book your beach holiday with our range of quaint Jeffrey’s Bay accommodations.
The town of Jeffreys Bay is named after the senior partner of the firm Jeffrey & Glendinnings that opened a store in 1849, believed to have been the first to have settled here. Jeffrey’s Bay has since grown from a sleepy fishing village to one of the fastest expanding urban areas in the country.
Jeffreys Bay is home to one of the five most famous surfing destinations around the globe. It hosts the annual Billabong Pro ASP World Tour surfing event at Supertubes in July, where spectators and surfers from all over flock to Jeffreys Bay for the event streamed live over the internet and various television channels. Don’t fret if you’re not an experienced surfer as a number of surfing schools in Jeffreys Bay offer anyone the chance to learn the art.
There are plenty of excellent beaches located in Jeffreys Bay. Apart from the famous Supertubes beach, Jeffrey’s Bay also features Paradise Beach and Dolphin beach. These beaches are great for romantic strolls, shell collecting, a variety of exciting water sports, and spotting Southern Right Whales breaching in the bay during season. The nearby Kabeljous, Seekoei, and Krom river lagoons are home to numerous water birds and are ideal for water sports like canoeing, boardsailing, and fishing.
Jeffreys Bay boasts a number of nature reserves in the area. To the north-east of Jeffrey’s Bay lies the Kabeljous Nature Reserve, a walk-about reserve known to anglers for its diversity of fish. It is one of the best preserved estuaries in the Eastern Cape, home to waterfowl, herons, and a variety of waders. In addition, the nearby Seekoei River Nature Reserve lies on the estuary formed by the Seekoei and Swart Rovers, and features over 120 species of birds, red-knobbed coots, buck, and other small animals. The reserve boasts a circular hike and a hide that overlooks the river. The Noorsekloof Nature Reserve, also nearby Jeffrey's Bay, has a 3 km trail running alongside a stream where you can see many species of bird and some small buck.
Other activities to be enjoyed in Jeffreys Bay include beach horse rides, visiting the Shell Museum, shopping at the Fountains Mall, and exploring the Jeffreys Bay Shark Aquarium. Outdoor enthusiasts will be in their element with mountain biking, golfing, river cruises, quad biking, and sand boarding down the dunes. Jeffreys Bay is also the ideal base from which to visit the Addo Elephant Park and the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve, the African Dawn Wildlife Sanctuary, Jeffreys Bay Surf Museum, and Lumin James Originals Pottery Studio.
