Kleinmond, meaning “small mouth”, earned its name from its location at the mouth of the Bot River Lagoon. It is situated within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve which supports over 1600 species of fynbos, 150 of which are endemic to Kleinmond. The reserve also features three areas of ancient indigenous forest which provides nature lovers with numerous secluded hiking and walking trails. During your exploration you may spot the rare Strawberry Rain Frog, March Rose proteas, a number of exotic birds, otters, or even an occasional leopard.

Despite its beauty and tranquillity, Kleinmond is the largest of the four coastal towns that fall within the biosphere and as such serves as the commercial centre for the Hangklip-Kleinmond area. Traditionally a retirement village, Kleinmond comes alive during the holiday season.

Kleinmond boasts a stunning Blue Flag beach and a placid lagoon that are great for water sports. Whether it’s swimming, canoeing, kayaking, or boating you enjoy, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The town’s coast is renowned for large numbers of lobsters in summer and whale watching in winter – making it a sought after destination all year round.

Make the most of your visit to Kleinmond. Visit the Kleinmond Toy Museum, Iron Museum (the only one of its kind in Africa), or the houses above Palmiet beach, which includes the thatched “Homestead” that was the very first house to be built in Kleinmond. Alternatively, visit the graves of the sailors from the Norwegian ship, Gustav Adolf, which sank off the coast of Kleinmond in 1902. Other attractions include Kleinmond harbour, which features a number of arts and crafts shops and seafood restaurants, and the “Preekboom”, a twisted tree found near the lagoon where church services are held (especially at Christmas time).

Those seeking something more energetic will enjoy abseiling, rock climbing, quad biking, rock and bridge jumping, dune surfing, or river rafting in Kleinmond. Golfers will be in their element with Kleinmond Golf Club and Arabella Golf Course within easy reach. Attractions that are well worth a visit include Immenhof Honey, Kasteelkop Picnic Area, and the Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Bike Reserve. Before you leave Kleinmond, take stroll through the wetlands to spot herds of wild horses, believed to be South Africa's only herd of wild horses in a wetland habitat.
