Description
Cederberg Kliphuis - Cedar Rouge is one of three self-catering Kliphuis Chalets situated in the far northern section of the Cederberg reserve, on the Pakhuys Pass, some 20 km from Clanwilliam on the flower route to the Biedouw valley and Wupperthal. Set against the backdrop of the famous Rocklands bouldering site, it is the perfect spot for climbing enthusiasts.
The Cederberg was proclaimed as a Wilderness in 1973. The 66,811-hectares of mountainous terrain is located in the Cape Floral Region only 3 hours outside Cape Town. The Cederberg Mountains, burnt orange by iron oxide, dominate the landscape. Jagged sandstone rock formations, like the Maltese Cross and the Wolfberg Arch, and ancient San and Khoi rock art, make this area truly spectacular.
The Cederberg lies 250 km north of Cape Town, stretching from the Middelberg Pass in Citrusdal to north of the Pakhuis Pass at Clanwilliam. The wilderness encompasses about 71,000-hectares of rugged, mountainous terrain, making it a top spot in the Western Cape for hiking and rock-climbing enthusiasts. The Cederberg is a World Heritage Site, is covered in mountain fynbos, including the laurel protea, the red disa, rooibos, and the rare and endemic snow protea. Rare Clanwilliam cedars, the area’s namesake, dot the higher mountain cliffs. The area is also rich in wildlife. Visitors with a keen eye may spot porcupines, honey badger, the Cape clawless otter and aardvark. The lucky few may even catch a glimpse of the elusive leopard. There are also smaller predators like the African wild cat, lynx, bat-eared fox, aardwolf and Cape fox. Other, more common animals include baboons, dassies, grey rhebok, klipspringers, duiker and grysbok.
The Cedar Rouge chalet can accommodate up to 8 guests and comprises 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen and living area. The first bedroom contains a double bed. The second and third bedrooms each contain a bunk bed. The bathroom contains a bath and a shower, a toilet and a washbasin. Hot water is supplied by a gas geyser. Lights are provided by solar power.
The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering and includes a gas stove, gas fridge, and cutlery and crockery. There is a 6-seater dining counter and stools. The lounge contains a double sleeper couch. The cottage opens to a covered balcony deck, and a private garden area with a picnic bench and built-in braai. A braai grid is provided.
