Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary
Description
The Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary is a 10 hectare reserve located near the estuary of the Lourens River in Somerset West, Western Cape. It used to be the site of a waste water treatment works, but is now protected within the Lourens River Protected Natural Environment, and managed by the nearby Helderberg Nature Reserve with help from the Somerset West Bird Club.
The sanctuary is set within a natural wetland and is home to waterfowl, migrant waders, and Ethiopian snipe. It offers a bird hide that is fantastic for twitchers and wildlife photographers. Due to its isolated location, the Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary is sometimes vandalised, and so visitors are advised to travel in groups.
